The Shrdlu Trio will perform their classic rock covers Saturday from 9:30 p.m. to 1 a.m. at G.W. Tavern, 20 Bee Brook Road, Washington.
The trio is composed of Shrdlu Ashe (harmonica, fiddle, guitars and vocals), Jim Lynch (guitar, vocals) and Pete Bennett (bass, vocals).
Shrdlu, of New Milford, is a bit of a musical fixture in the area, having performed off and on for almost 30 years. In addition to playing solo, as a duo and trio, he can sometimes be found playing a strolling fiddle, mostly in a Celtic realm.
At one time he was even (unofficially) named New Milford’s town troubadour.
He also runs the regular Wednesday night acoustic open mic at 59 Bank St. in New Milford and often performs solo and with the Shrdlu Band, which is the trio along with drummer Butch Raymond.
While Shrdlu writes and performs the occasional original song, he said he really enjoys covers, finding them more effective in getting a crowd worked up.
“People want to hear that stuff and my goal is to give them what they want,” he said.
Shrdlu believes that versatility and fun are two of the key ingredients of his bands.
They’ve been playing long enough, he said, that they are able to work their way through just about any tune requested by the audience.
It may not always be note-perfect, but Shrdlu doesn’t believe that always matters.
“I would rather see a slightly sloppy band that’s energetic and having a good time than a super tight, super uptight band — the guys with their backs to the audience for half the night and frowning. That doesn’t induce a good time.”
What’s more, he said, he and the band seem to possess an uncanny ability to please a crowd.
“I’ve been doing this since ’75 off and on and I know how to go into a place and find the audience and get them going. I love it and I thrive on it. On a good night when everybody’s cooking, we just have a good time and I’m in my prime, I’m in my element.”
Oh, and if it takes a bit of Skynard for you to have a good time, just ask nicely and you may be pleased.

The evening featured the SHRDLU ASHE BAND, and quite honestly they kicked butt. The selection of cover tunes and
originals kept the place rockin all night ... what I do know so far, [Shrdlu] he's a virtuoso. I have seen him play guitar, harmonica, (including
some rare ancient mouthboxes), and fiddle. - 6/02

Shrdlu Ashe, [New Milford] town minstrel: One of the founders of the K-Man band and for years a fixture at the Marbledale Pub, Shrdlu adds a dimension to the cultural life of the town.
He's everywhere ... another person who really loves the town. He's very funny, like Robin Williams, one of those people who keeps you in hysterics, he has a natural gift.
