Hello there Shrdheads,

Just when I thought I was going to announce two gigs for Saturday, I learned that the ShrdluTrio will be performing Friday, September 7 (or tonight, depending on when you read this. Or yesterday!) at the GW Tavern on Route 47 (Bee Brook Road) in Washington, Connecticut, starting at 9:30 PM. We’re scheduled to play every second Friday of the month, but they managed to slip in a first Friday…..glad I found out! Great food, drink, camaraderie, ambiance, Washingtonabilia. Get it all there. Dancing, too. Call ‘em at 860-868-6633 or check out www.gwtavern.com for all your informational needs.

Saturday, September 8, I’ll be fiddling from 3PM till 5PM at the Opening Reception for the Barn Again! In New Milford Exhibit at The Silo at Hunt Hill Farm Trust on Upland Road in New Milford, Connecticut. Go to www.hunthillfarmtrust.org/ for a description of the show which runs for a month. There is also a show of the renowned woodcarvings of Bill Rice and quilts by the Mountain Laurel Quilters, as well as food by The Upper Crust Trattoria, wine from the Hopkins Vineyard, and cows (!) from Randall Cattle. Call 860.355.0300.

And that evening, that is, this Saturday, the Shrdlu Band will be kicking up some dust at our retreat at 59 Bank at 59 Bank Street in New Milford, Connecticut, from 10 PM till 1:30 AM. Come for a good meal and beverage and some fine dancing music with your friends and lovers. Reservations at 860-350-5995 and their web is www.59bank.com.

And, for your listening and dancing pleasure, I mention that I saw a good sized black bear running down the road near my driveway a couple of hours ago. Quite cool! Ursa Major adds a certain je ne-sais quoi to the neighborhood.

See you there,

Shrdlu

Next weekend…..Hopkins Vineyard…details soon.

Howdydoo Shrdldoods and doodettes,

I’m sitting here with the balmy breeze blowing jasmine incense into the room from the windowsill, reminding me of the fragrance outside the B& B I played at in New Orleans in the Spring. Few items actually capture the true smell……..this one does. It’s intoxicating and inviting and sensuous. Brings me back!

But now, I’m back, to let you know, that I can really shake ‘em down. Unquote. But really, I intend to be doing just that, this Saturday, August 18, first, in a more moderate, mellow fashion from 2 PM till 4PM when I return to Panini Café, located at 7 Old Barn Road in Kent, Connecticut, where I’ll be performing, as I did last Saturday, in their Under the Maple musical series, outside, under the maple. It’s a serene setting, which lends itself to laidbackishness, just right for enjoying one of the sandwiches or some gelato, or something else that they serve. If you feel the need to call, the number is 860-927-5083.

That night, I and my Shrdlu Band will be stomping at 59 Bank at 59 Bank Street in New Milford, Connecticut from 10PM till 1AM and I invite you to join us and kick out the jams your ownself, simultaneously, at the same time, with us. We‘ll be gyrating and whatnot, perhaps playing Taco Bell’s Canon, perhaps not. Have a delicious meal and something to drink and then dance off the calories. More fun than the gym! Make reservations and get directions at 860-350-5995 and visit www.59bank.com. Or, I’ll give you directions right now…do this, don’t do that.

So now that you know how to make your Saturday more gladsome, I offer up, for anyone who has been curious about the origin of my name, other than that it’s an ancient name from Early-Shrdluvian times, a link to a website sent to me by friend Jim Fleegal, which elucidates a bit more of the history, replete with photos. (http://www.uh.edu/engines/epi2259.htm). Voila!

See you this weekend,

Shrdlu

Hello to Shrdluvanoids,

Received word from Christa that the AC at the GW is OK.....been replaced. Come be cool with the band on Friday.

Also received word from Jillian that Viagra is available for under $160. Whew! That's a relief.

See you this weekend.

Happy August Shrdluviacs,

Yeehaw!! Just returned from a beyond-awesome week of camping and kayaking with my mate in the north of New Hampshire and the northern coast of Maine. The weather was amazing, clear, sunny not humid ala right-here-right-now (although one NH staff member thought it was humid…..not!), one middle of the night thunderstorm. The loons called, red squirrels attacked our food, mosquitoes, oddly, were in blessed short supply, no meerkats appeared. Ukelele music was plentiful. Kayaking on the ocean was a bit dicey, as we’re inexperienced and autodidactics in that realm and the fog and waves were juussst a bit much. The moon was full over the lake.

The moon will not be full when the Shrdlu Trio with special guest Gino Zenobia on percussion filling in for Jim Lynch appears at the GW Tavern at 20 Bee Brook Rd (Route 47) in Washington Depot, Connecticut this Friday, August 10 starting at 9:30 PM and concluding in the wee small hours of Saturday. Last month my astute friend and bartender Christa alerted me to the fact that the AC was not working at this premier eztablizhment but I can only assume, and hope, that it is in full-functioning mode this week. Anyhoo, make your reservations at 860-868-6633 and visit www.gwtavern.com for more info and come have a great meal, a drink, some fun, and dig some tunes. Incidentally, Gino and his business partner Werner Kappes have just opened Marbledale Consignment at the blinking light on Route 202 in Marbledale, Connecticut, and are open Wednesday thru Sunday from 11-5. Buy! Sell!

Saturday, next day, August 11, when you’re hungry for a late lunch come over to Panini Café at 7 Old Barn Road in Kent, Connecticut for a delicious panini sandwich, or cold soup and and home-made gelato and/or cannoli whilst I play and croon between 2 PM and 4 PM under the Maple just outside. The phone # is 860-927-5083.

Still hungry? Restless? Need to dance? Well then, just high-tail it down to the Redding Roadhouse located at 406 Redding Road, at the intersection of Routes 53 and 107 in West Redding, Connecticut for Saturday night dinner and where you can find the 4-piece Shrdlu Band, for your dance-o-mania starting at 9:30 PM. It just happens to be Masterbartender Dean’s birthday, so come wish him well, as well. A good time is sure to be had by all! Do call 203-938-3388 for reservations and go to www.reddingroadhouse.com for your other needs.

See y’all there!

7/19/07

Howdy Protodluvians,

Your opportunity to be in propinquity with Shrdluvia this Saturday, July 21st occurs at 59 Bank at 59 Bank Street in Downtown New Milford, Connecticut between 10 PM and 1:30 AM when the Shrdlu Band, this week featuring Peter Bennett on guitar (!) with guest Marc Sichel performing bass duties, and of course, Butch Raymond on drums, will be holed-up for your dancing and listening pleasure while you eat, digest, imbibe, quaff and make merry in celebration of the fact that Mercury will be in retrograde, or not, and Jupiter is possibly still aligned with Mars, facts of which and/or reservations can be gotten at 860-350-5995 or www.59bank.com.

And, as they say in the Italian restaurant business,

Arrividerci.

7/11/07

Good day Shrdlfolk,

And a good day it is. Currently it’s cloudy with a breeze, a respite from the intense heat and humidity we’ve been having. It’s been excellent weather for air conditioning and fans.

Speaking of fans, this week includes the second Friday of the month, July 13 (damn, Friday the 13th again….hadn’t noticed) a night on which all you fans can mosey on down to the air conditioned splendor of the GW Tavern in Washington Depot, Connecticut, 20 Bee Brook Road (Route 47), to be precise to rollick and frolic with us, the Shrdlu Trio from 9:30 PM till 1:30 AM. Whyncha even have dinner there? The food is great, as I’ve said oh so many times before. Call 860-868-6633 to make your reservations and visit www.gwtavern.com for other particulars.

Last week we were joined at a party by a Mariachi band…a couple of violinists, singers and percussionists. And at the Georgetown Saloon our old friend Howie Bujese sat in on violin for a number of tunes. All very cool. I mention this because Howie complimented me on how I always get these newsletters out an hour before the gig. I was pretty proud! So here, it’s like two days early, man. Wow.

See you at the GW.

Stay cool,

Shrdlu

7/05/07

Helllooo Shrdlooers,

I don’t know where you were yesterday, but I didn’t see no fireworks where I was! I saw rain and clouds and more rain and a smattering of lightning. Didn’t hear the thunder because the band was too loud. Not really too loud, just louder than the thunder. Which, I suppose, makes it too loud. Whatever! And more rain.

At least we (the band) got to play at the lakeshore party we were booked for. And a good time was had by all. We had a couple of Mariachi violinists and singers and percussionists jamming with us, which was really fun, and conga lines and what-not. And my son Elliott played bass for the gig, making his professional debut. He did an outstanding job, if I do say so myself! We also debuted my new favorite song, Papa Dukie and the Mud People by the Subdudes.

This Saturday, July 7, from 2 PM till 4 PM I’ll be back playing under the Maple outside of Panini Café at 7 Old Barn Road in Kent, Connecticut, as I was last Saturday at the same time. Stop by and treat yourself to a great sandwich and gazpacho or gelato and groove with me and the tunes in the fresh air. It’s a “beyond relaxed” setting. Their phone number is 860-927-5083.

That evening, starting at about 9:15 PM the Shrdlu Band will be marking our return to the Georgetown Saloon in Georgetown, Connecticut. It’s been a few years since we’ve played there and we’re really looking forward to being back. The Saloon is revered, practically a “historic landmark” in Fairfield County, known for its food, dancing and overall conviviality. If you haven’t been there before, come check it out. This is an opportunity for those of you in that county to come see us without having to drive too far. We’d love to see a large turnout that night to ensure that we will be asked back, so do come! The address is 8 Main Street (Junction of Rtes. 107 and 57) in Georgetown (Redding {I don’t get it either}). Reservations at 203-544-8003 and their website is www.georgetownsaloon.com.. Thanks to Marc Huberman for getting us in.

I’ve decided to serialize the novel that I moments ago decided to write, and so here is the first installment, from deep in the bowels of the story:

He reached behind him with trepidation, fearing the loss of something gargantuan. Within moments, Geadman realized that all was not as he suspected and he would have to move forward forthwith with the least motion possible so as to avoid detection from above. Detective Stalwart called out from above “We know you’re in there Geadman.. Come out with your hands.” Continued…….

Tune in next time….or not.

Salutations Shrdlugans,

Well, it feels exactly like Summer now. I’m sure you agree. Steamy, swampy, muggy, mosquitoey, fireflyie. This would be a good time to get my car AC repaired, I’m thinkin’. Funny how I can never remember to use it once a month during the Winter so it remains charged or whatever the reason is that the user’s manual suggests running it. Maybe pop-ups would help me remember.

The hazy orange moon last night reminded me of how it appeared over a phantom tanker slowly, silently making its way in the dark up the Mississippi as we watched from the shore exactly two months ago. The riverboat Natchez passed by with a jazz band swinging and an old African-American sat on a bench with his bottle and his trumpet and alerted everyone around to the approaching of every female by commencing to play, not too well, the beginning of the chorus of Isn’t she lovely? It all seems sort of surreal now. I look back on my time in New Orleans as magical, a dip out of reality.

When the moon is completely full this Saturday, June 30th, the Shrdlu Band will be set up and wailing on the Gazebo on the Green here in New Milford, Connecticut. The event? We’ll be framing the town’s firework display. Starting at 9 PM we’ll break at 9:30ish while the fireworks happen and then we’ll re-commence at 10:30ish when they’re complete and play until 11:30. We played this event last year and everyone had a great time. The sound in the Gazebo and on the Green surrounding it is really good. The atmosphere is festive and there is other music, the Sonny Carroll Big Band performing before us.

Earlier in the day, specifically from 2 PM till 4 PM I’ll be playing solo under the Maple at Panini Café at 7 Old Barn Road in Kent Connecticut. Home to delicious panini sandwiches and home-made gelato, and soups and cannoli, the café offers outside dining in a beautiful little courtyard, and moi. Call them at 860-927-5083. And before or after your al fresco lunch, cross Route 7 and visit/shop at Backcountry Outfitters which is owned by the same proprietors as Panini Café.

And earlier still, from 10 AM till Noon on this very same Saturday, I’ll be doing the strolling fiddle thing at the New Milford Farmer’s Market which is held beginning at 9 AM just north of that very same Gazebo on the previously mentioned New Milford Green. Support local farms and growers and get some amazing fresh fruits and veggies, maybe pet a Goatboy Soap goat. No petting the farmers or fiddler!

As you may imagine, I’m hoping for/counting on nice weather for the whole day, and so far, at least, that is what is forecast.

Hope to see you somewhere that day. Stay cool!

Peace,

Shrdlu

Hello Shrdldudes and dludettes,

Here ‘tis, the first day of Summer, and a glorious day it’s been until this very moment when grey clouds are ominously filling the sky, auguring of a predicted thunderstorm. This is one of those typical late-from-me announcements on what’s happening in Shrdluvia this weekend. For you, just a little….for me a bit more. Tomorrow night, Friday, June 22nd, the 4-piece Shrdlu Band will be at the fabled, gabled Redding Roadhouse located at 406 Redding Road, at the intersection of Routes 53 and 107 in West Redding, Connecticut, to be exact! If you want to make reservations (always a good idea) for a great meal before some dancing, call 203-938-3388. And check out their menu, wine list, and whatnot at www.reddingroadhouse.com. We’ll be starting at 9:30 PM, tucked away in our corner of the Taproom, next to our portmanteaux, with drinkmeister Dean in attendance at the bar. So bring your posse of positrons on down and shake loose!

Saturday and Sunday the Trio and 4-piece, respectively, have private functions to perform at…..

Next week’s news next week. Coming soon, the Georgetown Saloon. Enjoy the weather,

Shrdlu

6/07/07

Hey there, shrdlers,

A sunny, pre-Summer greeting to y’all. We’ve certainly been having some beautiful weather of late, with the thunderstorm season kicking in, to boot. Fact is, my mate and I almost cancelled an overnight trip to Newport this past weekend on account of storms that were forecast but which didn’t materialize as the weather turned out to be gorgeous after all and we got to bike by the ocean, which was splendid (the biking, that is). Everyone talks about the weatherman but nobody does anything about him!

It was just a month ago today (and a day very much like today, clear-blue, sunny, but hotter and humid) that my son and I got in the car and headed back from Jazzfest and two weeks in New Orleans. Wow, what a time to look back on! What music we heard and what a luscious city! It seems so long ago already.

More current is the appearance, tomorrow, Friday, June 8, of the Shrdlu Trio at the also splendid GW Tavern at 20 Bee Brook Road (Route 47) in Washington Depot, Connecticut. We’ll begin, as usual, at 9:30 PM in our nook between the Tap Room and the Dining Room and play for your delectation which may or may not include dancing. I recommend having dinner there and staying for the duration. It’s what I’m gonna do. And I’ll start with the delicious fried oysters. Reservations are suggested and can be had at 860-868-6633 and go to www.gwtavern.com.

Saturday afternoon, June 9, I’ll be playing solo outdoors in the Music Under the Maple series which just re-started for the season at Panini Café at 7 Old Barn Road in Kent, Connecticut. They’ve changed the hours from previous years in order to make it more convenient for shopping and such so I’ll be there between 2 and 4 PM. You can do a little shopping and scrutating in town, visit Foreign Cargo, the Morrison Gallery and the Gregory James Gallery, among other things, and stop by for some homemade gelato and a scrumptious panino…they’re really good. It looks like the weather should be good, but since when do I believe the weatherperson? 860-927-5083 will get you an order ready for your arrival.

More news on more gigs next week.

See ya this weekend,

Shrdlu

5/16/07

Hello you Shrdlupeople,

Yes, this is the week of the fabulous 2-day Annual Barrel Tasting this Saturday, May 19th and Sunday, May 20th, from Noon till 5 PM at the beautiful Hopkins Vineyard overlooking Lake Waramaug in New Preston, Connecticut. The abnormal Shrdlu Trio, consisting of myself, Pete Bennett on guitar and vocals and Marc Sichel on bass and vocals, as opposed to the normal Trio, which has Pete on bass and Jim Lynch on guitar, will be providing the musical ambiance while you, the reveler, will be listening, tasting the wines, sampling the Artisan cheeses and other hors d’oeuvres (here I go with the spelling again), learning about the winemaking process, checking out the art in the Wine Bar, and just relaxing with friends. Does it get better? Children under 12 and Lifetime Case Club Members get in free, admission at the door is $20 or $15 purchased at the website or with one of their postcards which can be printed from their website, www.hopkinsvineyard.com . The Vineyard is located at 25 Hopkins Road in New Preston, and their phone number is 860-868-7954. This event is particularly fun when the weather is beautiful, so please join me in doing ceremonial Sun-dances, as practiced long-ago in ancient Shrdluvia, between now and Saturday to assure stunning (in the nice sense, rather than the half-inch hailstone sense) weather. See you there.

The following Saturday, May 26th I will be fiddling at the New Milford Farmer’s Market from 10 AM till Noon, amidst the Spring vegetables, local baked-goods, Goatboy Soaps, and flower and vegetable plants that will be available. Get your garden and flowerboxes started by purchasing some plants, many of them organically raised, from these local growers. The Market is on the Green on Main Street in New Milford, Connecticut, and runs every Saturday from now until October or November when the growing season is over and there’s nothing left to sell.

If you happen to be a member of the Lake Waramaug Country Club you can catch the Shrdlu Band that night, the 26th, at their Annual President’s Dinner Dance.

On Monday, May 28th, the normal (remember them?) Shrdlu Trio will be performing at the Kent Land Trust’s Memorial Day Picnic, I believe to be held at the Kent Fireman’s Field in Kent, Connecticut between 11 AM and 1 PM. It’ll be under tents, as needed, and will be a barbecue and there will be games and what-not for the kids.

And that, I think is all that’s left for the month in Shrdluvia.

I do want to say that if you’re planning to visit New Orleans anytime in the future, you could not do better than to stay at the Terrell House B&B where I played and stayed during Jazzfest. Their website, which is nice but does not do the place justice, is www.terrellhouse.com. Linda and Ed O’brien are theowners/hosts, and even your mother wouldn’t make you feel as welcome as they do, or serve a better breakfast!

There’s lightning now. Goodbye.

Shrdlu

5/10/07

Hey y’all, where y’at?,

That, of course, would be the greeting down in New Orleans, from whence I just returned after two splendid weeks! I heard so much great music, international acts and local/regional bands, both at Jazzfest and in the clubs and parks around town that I’m still trying to take it all in. I’m also still digesting the amazing cuisine. It was good to return to this gorgeous weather, though, with Spring having arrived while I was gone.

But now, back to work! Tomorrow/tonight, Friday, May 11, the Shrdlu Trio will be doing our monthly stint at the GW Tavern at 20 Bee Brook Road (Route 47) in Washington Depot, Connecticut, starting at 9:30 PM. I imagine it will be nice and warm so hanging out on the terrace will be a distinct possibility after ingesting a great meal and having a drink or two as the band plays. And there will be dancing, too! So be there. 860-868-6633. www.gwtavern.com.

For more dancing come see the 4-piece Shrdlu Band the following night, Saturday, May 12 when we’re back at 59 Bank at 59 Bank Street, New Milford, Connecticut. We’ll begin at 10 PM and rock the joint till it’s time to go. They’ve enlarged the already excellent menu so come grab a bite and then shake and shimmy. www.59bank.com. 860-350-5995.

Next week the other Shrdlu Trio will be at the famous Annual Hopkins Vineyard Barrel Tasting. More on that next week.

See you this weekend.

Shrdlu

4/19/07

Hello Shrdluvians, as promised (?) here's the reminder that this Saturday, April21, my band will be at 59 Bank in New Milford, Connecticut, starting at 10 PM. Marc Sichel will be filling in on bass and Marty Carlson will be handling the lead guitar, those two complementing the stalwart Butch Raymond on drums. Catch a great meal, some great music, he said modestly, and groovy vibes, for an indubitably good time. 860-350-5995. www.59bank.com.

See you there,

Shrdlu

4/11/07

Good morgning Shrglooers,

Here we are, well into April, Spring, Daylight-Savings-Time, Tax-time and probably a plethora of Other-times unknown or thought about by me. It shore is nice to be having the fresh air of the season, even though it’s not yet as warm as I’d like it. It will be soon enough. Birds are migrating….yesterday I saw a small flock of Cedar-waxwings, on their way north, in the trees by my house. The Goldfinches are re-getting their gorgeous summer-yellow. And the Goldbergs still reside in Great Barrington, to the best of my knowledge.

This Friday night, April 13…wait a minute….it’s Friday-the 13th!! No @#^$%&*#$%$. As I was saying, the Shrdlu Trio will be migrated to our postage-stamp sized “stage” at the GW Tavern located at 20 Bee Brook Road (Route 47) in Washington Depot, Connecticut, where we will be kicking out the jams commencing at 9:30 PM and finishing up an hour and a half into the 14th, dispelling any possible bad luck that might have occurred and accumulated in the previous 24 hours. A vomitorium (it’s not what you think, look it up) leads past the bar to the main dining area in this fine establishment, and we’ll be situated right there between the Taproom and Main room in our usual style. Reservations can be made by calling 860-868-6633 and you can check the place out at www.gwtavern.com before checking the place, and us, out by being there in the flesh. So do migrate on over….birds of a feather and whatnot. Bring your boas and dancing shoes for later.

So you know, Saturday of the next week, April 21st, the full Shrdlu Band will be at 59 Bank in New Milford, Connecticut. More on that next week.

And the following two weeks my son and I will be staying at and playing for the guests at the Terrell House B&B in New Orleans and digging the Jazzfest and way-cool atmosphere. My mate will be spending a few days with me there, too. Thanks to Gene and Susan Bishop Wrabel for introducing me to the city and the B&B. Talk about migration!

And thanks also, to Paul Chayka for his linguistic acumen.

That’s it in a nutshell. I hope to see millions of you at the GW.

Peace,

Shrdlu

Good day out there in Shrdluvia,

I’m sitting here listening to 2Pac Shakur with the younger generation while I’m typing this. It’s a beautiful day, windy and cold as the dickens, and the hour of the Shrdlu Band playing at the Redding Roadhouse is fast approaching. We’ll be starting in eight hours, that is, at 9:30 PM, tonight, Saturday, January 20, 2007, and the precise location of the venue, so you can set your navigational system, is 406 Redding Road, at the intersection of Routes 53 and 107 in West Redding, Connecticut, to be exact! Reservations for this fab destination are to be made/found at www.reddingroadhouse.com and 203-938-3388. Don’t be puerile….. set your car on cruise control and slide on down for some tunes, food and drink for your pleasure and entertainment. Dean is your host and master bartender for the evening, and a great guy, to boot.

See you there,

Shrdlu

1/13/07

Greetings Shrdluphiles,

Looky here! It’s Saturday, January 13, 2007, and this here’s a last-minute gigfomercial for those of you (uv u) who have no immediate plans for, and are looking for something to (2) do, tonight. I don’t gainsay that this should have been in your inbox days ago, but I know that many peeps would have deleted (in agony) the message and/or forgotten the information by now, so timeliness (or not) counts for something.

That being the case, I propose to you (u) something perspicuous to (2) do with your friends/paramour/mate/spouse that’ll be fun, filling, satisfying, and lacking in asperity. And that something, of course, is to head out to the GW Tavern at 20 Bee Brook Road (Route 47) in Washington Depot, Connecticut, and imbibe, indulge and impale to your heart’s content as the Shrdlu Trio spins out melodies, harmonies and rhythms to get your heart and feet mobile. 9:30 PM is when the band strikes up and the restaurant serves its outstanding food until, I believe, 11 PM. It’s juusst Wintery enough that there will be a fire going in the fireplace in front of the couch. How cool/romantic is that?

Any further useful information may be gotten at 860-868-6633 or www.gwtavern.com.

Next week is the Redding Roadhouse…more on that next week.

See you tonight.

Shrdlu

1/6/07

Well, this is the shortest, and latest gig announcement ever. I hope it's not a harbinger of my life in '07...i'm already short and late! Tonight, January 6, the four-piece Shrdlu Band will be at 59 Bank at 59 Bank Street in New Milford, CT, starting at 10 PM.Come on down for dining, drinking, dancing and other delights. See you there.

HAPPY NEW YEAR 2007!

1/07

Greetings Shrdluviacs,

I would like to thank all of you my friends/fans for coming out and supporting me and my various bands in the past year. Without you there is nothing. And a thank you to the various venues which have hosted me/us, and the folks who had my/our music at your/youse parties. Keep live music alive!

Peace,

Shrdlu
